Stock Market

What is the stock market?

A stock market is where traders/Investors gather to list, buy and sell shares of listed companies. This is where you can invest and trade in company shares. The share market is also where companies make their shares openly available and raise money.

Is Share market different from the stock market?

Yes. The share market is a part of the stock market. In a share market, you can invest in company shares. In a stock market, meanwhile, you can find other financial assets like bonds, mutual funds, and derivatives available for trading. In this way, the stock market is much larger than the share market.

Why do a country like India need a stock market?

  • Capital raise: Companies raise a lot of money by selling shares to the public. This helps companies grow further.

  • Brings buyers and sellers together: There are thousands of companies in India; further still, there are billions of investors in the country. It would be difficult for interested parties to find each other when spread over a vast geographic area.

  • A common platform for all: By setting up a common marketplace, the stock market throws the gates open for small investors too from the remotest areas. Otherwise, it could have been a gated community reserved for the rich.

  • Price discovery: How do you know what the right price is for a company’s stock? How does a company know how valuable it is? The answers can be traced back to the stock’s performance on the share market.

  • Trickle down economics: By investing in stocks, many investors—big or small—can benefit from the improvement in the economy as well as any rise in company profits. Even consumers can thus stand to benefit from their own purchases.

  • Wealth creation: Stocks have traditionally been one of the best investments for wealth creation. They have the potential to multiply in value over time. This can help investors achieve different goals in life.

  • Sentiment meter: The stock markets react to various social-political factors too—over and above the financial and economic factors. This is because companies function better when the social and political environment is positive. Thus, the stock market can often reflect the sentiments of the general public.

To be a successful investor, you need to learn about the stock market. Your basic stock market knowledge has to be strong enough. Only then can you make good decisions in the market.
